Title: xref's will not unload or detach
Post by: shollinger on July 11, 2007, 08:01:47 AM
We are using autocad 2007 and one of our users can no longer detach or unload xrefs in the model.  You can refedit the xref, or update it but not unload or detach.  I have opened this model on different machines and same thing happens.  Any suggestions?

I have opened all orig. models that have been xrefed in and checked for circ. xref, and purged models and still no luck.

What message do you get when you try to detach a file?

Tried to bind the xref in the drawing to see if I could then erase it and purge and reload.
detach has same message No matching xref names found.
Command:xref, bind
No matching xref names found.
But it is clearly in the model and listed in the xref manager?

If the current file is used as an xref in any of the files you have xref'd, you have a circular xref and none of them will detach.  They should however unload.  When you unload it in the xref manager, what messages do you get?

Start with Wblock'ing the file to another name and see what that does.

I had this happen to me with 2007.  I don't what causes it either.

Warning WBLOCKing with xrefs can produce unexpected results.

Full story:
We do industrial engineering.  Using Cadworx 2007 plant pro.  All back ground steel and existing piping is on server in client\unit\disciple\.  These background models are referenced in new projects.  The background models have no other models xref'd in them they are stand alone, steel, conc, piping, or instrument.
While using the xref manager I get the
No Matching xref names found error when trying to unload or detach the xref.  But I can open it using the manager.  No go figure that one

Alright, now throughly confused.
Erased xref,
purged
closed drawing w/save
opened drawing
xref gone, and all assocations.
reloaded xref
and same thing can not unload or detach but can reload and open.
about to give up.

check the filenames, there was an issue with square brackets in xref filename.

That's probably it.  You can't use the "pound" # in a file name, or anyother wildcard for that matter.

It appears that is the problem.  But only with this model.  We have several other models with 150# 300# , or 450#_steam  and they all xref in and out.  I have asked that everyone not use these symbols in the past for files names but it seems that once again we are straying from our standards.  Trying to resolve this found many more problems with layers, page setups and dwt files not being used correctly.
Thank you for everyones help

also, you cannot detach an xref, that is only on the list because it's xref'd into a drawing, that is xref'd into yours... you have to detach the whole parent xref, cannot detach just the child... if that makes sense.

Josh,

I think you're trying to say you cannot detach nested xrefs...

that's the ticket!

I'm having a stupid day... (shutup, peanut gallery!)

I couldn't even think of the word shingle a minute ago... I stood there stammering.. "asphalt... uh.. tiles... floppy... little... roofing..."  "shingles?"  "YES!"

it never a good idea to use "wildcard" symbols in the name of anything
