I went and saw the site, it will be interesting to see what new features they are going to introduce... (I like more their objectdcl logo or if they kept the previous one, than the new one in opendcl that looks like an installer or something else, nothing about the program per see, but maybe that would change in the release version) :)

Well, at least auto/visual lisp programmers will have a choice! that's a win-win  ;-)

I don't have much faith in seeing fruit from this tree.

Having said that -- I think they have screwed up on their licensing scheme -- they should make the run times free and license the dialog editor. They've got it the other way round, which if you think about it will be a pain for users, not developers.

Yep... and it will be hard, but let see what they end up providing... as long Owen takes part of the open project, will be difficult to compete.

I do not plan to use or develop any new routine with any of both options, did quite a few, that I just plan to posted here for us, I just need a 40 hrs day... :)

Yes, I wondered about that. Does this mean that if a developer markets an appy that uses ObjectDCL the client must purchase the ARX, if he doesn't already have it. ?

I notice it's been tested in Windows 2003.

I dunno KB.

If Ductisoft were savvy they would have made the run times free as well as the IDE, licensing the use of the IDE to produce commercial applications. For example, the free version of the IDE would compile an encrypted message into the ODC / ODS files that displays at runtime. The message would be (words to the effect) "Compiled with the free version of ObjectDCL -- free for personal use only". The licensed version would remove said message.

Packaged this way many developers would try and become familiar with the product, thereby encouraging other developers to use the product. Ductisoft would make money when developers intend to make money with ODCL applications, don't want the nag to appear or just want to support the effort because they're wired that way.

The way they've packaged it? I don't see the masses migrating to said product.

Then again what do I know about beer.

{ hic }

There was a lot of noise in February about their 'Business Plan' so we can only hope they've done their homework.

... but they still have time to change the plan :-)

No matter really -- I'm a fan of Owen's work and would much rather rally behind his (and his colleague's) efforts.
