If you must yes, and you and your colleagues know about it and how to manipulate it.

But in my experience it's usually folk who don't know what they are doing that end up putting viewports inside viewports, and there is usually an easier \ tidier way around it.

*Generally* speaking I agree, avoid nested viewports.

It was done out of necessity, not because it was desireable.

I stopped and noticed this on my sons screen and I would  try using layers for your viewports and turn the layer off you do not want see and that way you may not need to try and hide it. I will try this myself it seems to be a good idea.
