Sounds like Catia V5:

25,000 per seat, plus the anual subscrition for the service packs, plus the lease for the "preffered" hardware from IBM, plus any add in packs such as sheet metal, kinematics, FEA........ on and on,

Autocad isn't so bad.  I think if you can reclaim the license exspense in 3 months then it is worth it.

You didn't post AutoCAD LT prices, but they have risen as much too.

One thing to keep in mind is to shop around. There are different resellers and they will sell for different amounts.
One price shopping is only if you buy it from AutoDESK.

You also didn't post the subscription cost. I pay $500 yearly for plain AutoCAD.
Once you make the initial purchase, you can do the subscription and not have to
make the initial purchase again...

You can expense this purchase out for a couple years (tax break)

Don't get me wrong, it is expensive. I've got full Autocad on subscription.
Microstation and Powerdraft on subscription as well.
let alone all the other software that we need to do our jobs...

Would you be needing the software 40hrs a week? Or just per project basis?
Depending on your answer, I might have an idea for you...

You just have to make sure that your fee is high enough to absorb all these costs,
taxes and money in your pocket....

AutoCAD's is cheap.

Can I send you my order then? I can get by with Map but I'd rather have C3D. Although with C3D I'll probably have to upgrade my PC so scratch C3D for now and send me Map please.

thanks Randy that will be a big help!

:-)

its in the mail, be looking for it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "per project basis" but it's definitely not 40hrs a week type of thing. I've _may_ have a chance to pick up some nice work doing site plans but I need the software. Other than Map I haven't found any other software that will work for me, i.e. georeferenced images with some cogo.

Would something like Luis' OSS civil app do the job if it was able to be used on Intellicad say?

It might help but the images are my biggest problem, that and a bunch of GIS data that I use.

As far as I can tell, Intellicad does not provide for attaching images and cogo functions would be pretty much "roll your own" as well, although a small app in Land Lubber named WGLisp would fill in some annotation needs.  Luis' civil package is good as far as it goes.  The most pressing additions I can see that it needs are the ability to display the descriptor field when importing points and ability to create a second DTM surface.  It would be desirable to be able to export these as well.

I tried QCad last week and it's a nice piece of software that can import  _some_ image formats just not the ones I need. Of course it's not designed for Civil work either.

What kind of formats can it read?  Would there be a way to convert the image format in a third program?

You can, at least some of them, i.e. jpg2 > jpg and sid to tiff but those ecw files can get _really_ big when converted. That plus you loose all the georeferencing in the image. I tried, it's to much of a guessing game.

At least jpg2, sid and tiff. ecw would be asking to much I'm sure. If they could make it read the associated world files ( a separate file that contains coordinates and scale factor of the image ) that would be fantastic!
