Autodesk pricing
« on: September 25, 2007, 09:03:35 AM »
Anyone notice the prices for Autodesk products? :-O

The cost of drafting is going UP!!

AutoCAD ---- $3,995.00
Map -------- $5,295.00
C3D -------- $7,495.00

This sucks for the small businesses.

Yeah, the worst or most insulting of these prices being C3D, as most if not all of MAP within C3D doesn't work with C3D objects, but one still must pay full price to have MAP in there even if it doesn't fully function. I could see it costing more IF it all functioned together properly.

The bad news is any discussion of these prices is NOT permitted at the Autodesk newsgroups, NOR the Solid Vapour controlled user group formerly known as AUGI. So the company and their proxy have effectively limited the platform of debate about business model and how it impacts the end users.

At first glance, it sure seems so.

But if 1 engineer can use C3D to design and create his drawings that would normally take him and 2 draftsmen to output, it sure seems to me like it is a cost savings. Last I heard, even draftsmen make in excess of $7500/year.

I won't argue that one can be productive with C3D for the most part. What I will argue is that one could be far more productive IF MAP within C3D actually worked with objects created with it and would justify the full price.
Given that most C3D users have no need for most of Autocad, and have limited use of MAP functionality the price would make a lot more sense around 5k.

Personal feeling here, but you shouldn't have to finance a CAD package.

I just wish they would wait until they get so many problems/bugs out of C3D before they jack up the price.  I still don't even consider what we have to be an official release - it's giving Autodesk a lot of credit even calling it a "Beta product".  I could easily come up with a list of 500 outstanding bugs - I think I've already reported about 150 to Autodesk over the last 18 months, and seen maybe 5 of those actually fixed so far.  That's lead to frustration, and I've basically given up reporting the bugs - it takes too much time, and there are too many of them.  Maybe if they start fixing the 150 I've reported so far...

What are the annual upgrade/subscription fees?

PDS        =   $800/month/seat
ISOGEN   =  $1000/month/seat
Tekla      =  $1000/month/seat

AutoCAD's is cheap.

Yep and a single full license for any of those is over twenty grand.

Can I send you my order then? I can get by with Map but I'd rather have C3D. Although with C3D I'll probably have to upgrade my PC so scratch C3D for now and send me Map please.

thanks Randy that will be a big help!

Sounds like Catia V5:

25,000 per seat, plus the anual subscrition for the service packs, plus the lease for the "preffered" hardware from IBM, plus any add in packs such as sheet metal, kinematics, FEA........ on and on,

Autocad isn't so bad.  I think if you can reclaim the license exspense in 3 months then it is worth it.

You didn't post AutoCAD LT prices, but they have risen as much too.

One thing to keep in mind is to shop around. There are different resellers and they will sell for different amounts.
One price shopping is only if you buy it from AutoDESK.

You also didn't post the subscription cost. I pay $500 yearly for plain AutoCAD.
Once you make the initial purchase, you can do the subscription and not have to
make the initial purchase again...

You can expense this purchase out for a couple years (tax break)

Don't get me wrong, it is expensive. I've got full Autocad on subscription.
Microstation and Powerdraft on subscription as well.
let alone all the other software that we need to do our jobs...

Would you be needing the software 40hrs a week? Or just per project basis?
Depending on your answer, I might have an idea for you...

You just have to make sure that your fee is high enough to absorb all these costs,
taxes and money in your pocket....

I'm not sure what you mean by "per project basis" but it's definitely not 40hrs a week type of thing. I've _may_ have a chance to pick up some nice work doing site plans but I need the software. Other than Map I haven't found any other software that will work for me, i.e. georeferenced images with some cogo.

Would something like Luis' OSS civil app do the job if it was able to be used on Intellicad say?

As far as I can tell, Intellicad does not provide for attaching images and cogo functions would be pretty much "roll your own" as well, although a small app in Land Lubber named WGLisp would fill in some annotation needs.  Luis' civil package is good as far as it goes.  The most pressing additions I can see that it needs are the ability to display the descriptor field when importing points and ability to create a second DTM surface.  It would be desirable to be able to export these as well.

I tried QCad last week and it's a nice piece of software that can import  _some_ image formats just not the ones I need. Of course it's not designed for Civil work either.

What kind of formats can it read?  Would there be a way to convert the image format in a third program?

You can, at least some of them, i.e. jpg2 > jpg and sid to tiff but those ecw files can get _really_ big when converted. That plus you loose all the georeferencing in the image. I tried, it's to much of a guessing game.

At least jpg2, sid and tiff. ecw would be asking to much I'm sure. If they could make it read the associated world files ( a separate file that contains coordinates and scale factor of the image ) that would be fantastic!

This may be worth a quick look -> http://www.bricscad.com/products/thirdParty/CivilCAD/default.jsp

edit - from the creators -> http://www.sivandesign.com/CivilCAD.asp
the prices are getting back up to AutoCAD but this is a vertical so it may work out cheaper if it does what you want??

You might check into Global Mapper or Geoexpress View.  You might be able to import your aerial photos into one of these applications and export it in another format with the world file created as well.  I use Geoexpress View to import 06 county photos and crop out the area of interst.  The world file is created for the area of interest when it is exported.

Hope this Helps

"Eartworks" is Cockney for "I hear it works"...   :-D

Has anyone checked out that Civil package?  The Roads part looks similar to Carlson's, but it's a bit hard to tell how easy it is to use for the weird situations that always crop up in real-world projects.  I also didn't really see anything for working with parcels and doing plats, or support for site grading or construction calcs or anything like that.  But the demos seem limited - for example, they list a "Survey" package, but have no demo or mention of what the package does (at least as far as I could find).
