Locked drawing problem.
« on: April 21, 2005, 04:11:57 PM »
Today my co-worker tried to open a file, which the server said was in use by someone else.

I looked in the working folder and there was no dwl file, but I could only open it read only. I shut everyones computer down, still locked, tried to copy the file but no go, still locked.

I could only open the file normally after I re-booted the server.  This only happens to files used by one guy in the office.

Anyone have any ideas what's going on, because the only way he can use these files is if I re-boot the server which isn't ideal when I have to disconnect the 3 other offices connected to our server.

Is the server running netware?

nope its windows NT.

Would a slow network connection not affect us all?

It can't be his computer as it's only a week old, and he had this problem on his old one as well.  Also I can't open the files on any computer.

My boss is not happy that I have to reset the server a couple of times a week because of this, but it's the only way I can find to release these files.

It's windows' fault for needing to be reset in the first place.

I thinks it's more to do with something he's doing wrong.

His CAD skills are a little tedious, Draw - line, Draw-circle etc etc.

USE THE BUTTONS!!!!!!!

We used to have that problem here. it WAS a duff network connection!
there were two of us in the office, both on the same network but my co worker had the problem you described. IT spent months investigating it, needless to say, they couldn't find anything. After much wracking of brains we found another network connection point in the office behind a cupboard, plugged into that to see what happened and the problem went away.

and you are right ~ that IS the only way to release those files.

Before we jump all over Windoze or the Network, there is another thing that may cause the same problem.

If XEDIT is set to 1, that means another user can REFEDIT that drawing while it's XREF'd.  Another user may have this drawing XREF'd and this drawing may have XEDIT set to one.  If the other guy has his file open when this drawing gets opened it'll be read-only.

That's a good thought and very viable.

Weve had a similar problem before when our IT department accidently changed our permisions for the server. All our files were read only and were unable to save any work until they sorted it.Could you have the permisions on the server set differently for one user? :?

nah he has a standard cad account.  Starngely it's only on one project though.

Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but this project has a load of xrefs and it's a huge problem to try to repath them all.
