free VB 2005
« on: March 14, 2007, 10:16:28 PM »
For anyone interested, there are some labcasts, and they will mail you a Standard edition of VB 2005
Look Here
Everyone has a photographic memory, Some just don't have film.
They say money can't buy happiness, but it can buy Bacon and that's a close second.
Sometimes the question is more important than the answer. (Thanks Kerry for reminding me)

I wonder if anyone's realised that one of the books shown for that course is a C# book :-)

I saw the free software, and hoped MS would give C# standard away.  I already bought it, so its not a big deal, but I will always take another copy for backup

Well, I have started learning C#. Got my program ported over somewhat. Tried to make a release version of it. Can't make a release version. The free visual studio 2005 that they gave was a "not for resale" version. It is made to not make the release version.

12. NOT FOR RESALE SOFTWARE. Software identified as "Not For Resale" or
"NFR," may not be sold or otherwise transfered for value, or used for any
purpose other than demonstration, test or evaluation.

I guess I will evaluate it, then see if sharpdevelop, c# express, or commandline compile will work. I think they did trickery.

What is it not doing?  NFR normally just means it cant be upgraded, they dont usually remove features

You can only build a debug version.

Strange they gave you a restricted version.
VS2005 or 2008 STD is not very expensive though.

In options, can you not change it to final?  I found that by accident one day

I changed it to release. Tried it, still makes debug. I saved it and closed. Went back in and it shows debug again. I closed it, opened it with notepad++ and changed it to release there. Went back into VS, still showed debug. Checked in notepad++ again, it said release. They have it hard coded to only make the debug version on the Not For Resale edition.

Also, I can not open projects from any network drives. They have to be on the local machine.

Have you tried downloading VS2008 Express and compiling your project with it?

not yet. Once I get the program finished, I will worry about compiling.
