DWG and missing SHX files

It's been a while since I've been in AutoCAD but.... if you send a client a mix of DWGs and SHX files, will AutoCAD find the SHX files if they're in the same location as the DWG?  Similar to how it finds xrefs?

could depend on how  they have set the FONTALT variable
