What causes AutoCAD to crash?
« on: July 23, 2008, 11:59:50 AM »
I'm having a bad day today.

I have one drawing (only 1.7meg) that has crashed multiple times today. Each error message I get is different, each time it crashes I am doing something different. I have audited the file, and it shows no errors, it is purged, no layer filters (beyond the few we use)

What can cause this drawing to crash?
The latest error message is attached so someone might have an idea what it means.

Using MAP 2008. 1gb ram, no add on software.
Thanks for explaining the word "many" to me, it means a lot.

You may want to try 'Wblocking' out your drawing into a new file.

It has worked for me in the pasted when I encounter drawings with similar problems as yours.

Hope it helps!  :-)

I have had AutoCAD crash for various reasons ...

Scenario 1
Insert a block with a polyline entity, crossing an object that can be trimmed, trim to the polyline entity in the block ... fatal error always

Scenario 2
Select an anonymous block and mirror it so it is -1 in only 1 plane. Wblock that object to a new block. Insert the new block, mirror it so the anonymous block is -1 in the other plane. Attempt to explode the block ... fatal error nearly half the time

Scenario 3
Pasteclip as block, objects from another drawing, immediately bhatch using the pasted block as part of the boundary ... fatal error 20% of the time

There are more that I have identified, but I can't recall them at the moment.

This is what I do if I have a dwg that is acting 'quriky'.

I used to blow all kinds of time trying to get them to work right, just for my curiosity, but no I don't even try figuring it out. I just WBlock and move on.

Some of todays crashes I wasnt doing anything. I'd done a command, it worked, I turned away to help someone, and Kaboom. AutoCAD crash. How would you describe that on an error report. Other times I dragged a table from the tool palette, and it was ok till I moved it. Another was when I'd double-click edited the DText. yet another was when I was using the Express tool to change case. There just seemed no logic to when and where the crashes were happening.

Someone has to ask and I'll volunteer. Have you restarted you're computer?

Mine is in PS...v-port active and locked.  If I do a hide, then say, dimension, then try to pan....gone!  Not even an error msg.....just gone.
Something to do with panning in a locked, hidden v-port.  Drives me nuts!  :ugly: :ugly:

Another thing that'll cause AutoCAD to crash is bad brakes.....it'll do it every time!
