I just got some tragic news. Richard 'Sinc' Sincovec was found comatose in his home last night by a relative who went looking for him when he failed to show for Thanksgiving dinner. He is in the hospital in Colorado Springs, CO, where the doctors say IF he makes it through this weekend he MAY have a chance of full recovery.
Please send whatever prayers or thoughts you can. Hoping Praying for a speedy and full recovery!
I will post more once I learn more. His sister, who lives just a few miles south of me, somehow managed to locate me and showed up at my front door to give me the news.
-
Hoping for the best here for him, awful news and an awful time for it for his family
-
My thoughts and sincere best wishes for Richard, his family and friends.
-
Thanks for letting us know Jeff. That is truly tragic news. I hoping for the best outcome.
Please let me know if you need my services in any way.
-
All the best for Richard and his family, my thoughts are with them.
-
Prayers are heading your way Richard. For you and all the family.
(Thank you for the news Jeff.)
-
Praying. Keep us posted.
-
I'm shocked to read this sad news. My thoughts and prayers go out to Richard and his family ... hoping, wishing for the very best outcome.
-
I will make my best wishes to Sinc with the setting sun tonight so that it will rise tomorrow over him and bring him peace in whatever way.
-
I heard from Sinc's dad about an hour ago. His condition improved substantially overnight. They are now cautiously optimistic. He is responding to voice commands and moving in bed. His Dad sounded quite relieved today compared to last night.
I'm at a rest stop on I-5 headed for Vegas. Will update again when I hear more.
-
Sad news, glad there is a little improvement.
Sending positive thoughts to Sinc.
-
Swampy thoughts are with him and his family.
(This is a good thing) :-)
-
More good news! Here's a quote from his sister an hour, or so, ago.
He is now talking and able to recognize himself and family, and the doctor said it's a miracle he's alive. He's not out of the woods yet, so I ask you my friends to please keep my brother in your thoughts and prayers, because something saved him once and I can't lose him right now. Thank you, friends.
Not much I can add to that, other than, Get Well, Sinc!
-
Good thoughts and prayers from Maine.
-
Thoughts and mojo coming from this side of the world too... I hope the improvement continues until full recovery has been made.
-
Thanks for the update Jeff. Indeed good news.
-
Thoughts and prayers to Sinc. Man, I hope the doctor's can figure out what happened and get him on a good treatment program so this doesn't happen again!! He's WAY too young to be having these kind of problems.
-
Hope for ALL the best for Sinc --- Get well --- !!!!!!!!
-
I hate hear that.
Hang in there and keep getting better!!
-
Hope you get better. :-(
-
Sending more energy to Sync.

Prayers coming!

What the... prayers and good vibes sent.
What happened? Or did I miss something.
-
More good news this morning. Just heard from Sinc's dad who said Sinc is alert and aware of whats going on. Still has a ways to go, but all indicators are positive.
Thanks for all of the prayers and support. I know they have been a huge factor in Sinc's progress.
-
Great news. Thanks for the updates Jeff!
Prayers are still coming.
Get healthy Sinc!!
we are all rootin' for ya!

Thoughts and prayers that your recovery continues, Sinc!!!

Tuesday update. I have a card at the booth for anyone here in Las Vegas to sign. Sinc was to be moved out of ICU tonight. He was up walking around a bit, although still quite weak. It wouldn't surprise me to see him checking in here himself soon. It sounds like he is improving at a rapid pace.
-
That is wonderful news Jeff.
Continuing with the postive thoughts for a full and rapid recovery!
-

Late Wed. AU update:
Sinc's Dad reported to me earlier there is a setback today. Docs are now very concerned that his kidneys took a beating and may have a hard time recovering. I had hoped to hear more before reporting this, but it's been quiet from CO for a while.
I'll be back with more when I know more. Keep the positive vibes and prayers going, please. I know they help.
Renderman, aren't you attending AU? If so, please find me in the Exhibit hall on Thursday.
-
Any info on what caused it?

Sadly, no... I would if I were there, Jeff. :|

Oh man, what happened to the sincmyster ?
Cheers to you getting well and getting your butt back to the swamp.
-
Last AU update: As of 5 p.m. PST on Nov 29, Sinc's kidney's were responding to treatment and he is in good spirits. He's talking and alert, his dad is going to try to allow us to talk on the phone tomorrow (no cell phones in the hospital I think). So, once again, the outlook is on the plus side. I will post again when I talk to either Sinc or his Dad tomorrow.
-
That's great news Jeff !!
Please be sure to tell Sinc he's in our thoughts.

Please be sure to tell Sinc he's in our thoughts.
Yes, please do. And thanks for the update Jeff.
-
Very good news. Ask him how the hospital food is?
There has to be a hospital somewhere that has decent food with some taste. :|
-
Very good news.
It is, indeed! :)

I actually quite enjoyed most of the food I had while in the tiny little hospital in our tiny little town. It may have had more to do with how low my expectations were.
-
Great News!
-
This is great news. Heres wishing for a continued speedy and full recovery.
-
More good news!
I just got off the phone with Sinc. He's still fairly weak, but gaining strength every day. He said he's hoping to be back at work in a week, or two at the most. So I'd say he's definitely feeling better! And I did tell him about all the well wishes being sent. I'm pretty sure that he still doesn't have access to the internet, but I will be sure to point him here and to the similar thread over on the Autodesk C3D forum once he can access them.
-
That's awesome Jeff. So good to hear, and grateful you can share it with us. Thank you, and continued prayers for swift and thorough recovery. Michael.
-
Tell him to check over at Beer Leg/ Surveyor Connect also. I have been reposting your info over there too. He has a lot of well wishers there too.
-

Ditto.
-
Thanks, Dent, will do. I had thought about posting over there but had never posted on that site before...wasn't sure of their protocol.
-
Their "protocol" is probably the sane as here, so there would be no problems posting there. Another group of good people talking about what they do and trying to learn how to do it better. Probably half the folks on there are the CAD Monkeys. AND like this site, they are very concerned when one of the posters goes down like Sinc did.
Beer Leg or Surveyor Connect would be a good site for anyone here in the survey drafting end to peruse from time to time. A lot of good info is available there too. They are not as much into the engineering stuff and LISP programming , but are more of the small one or two guys in the field trying to make a living types.
If you follow one site you are missiing a lot. There are MANY sites out there, The trick is to find the best ones. For the programming power user, this is the place to be, for the Surveying and Mapping CAD Tech, Surveyor Connect has a lot to offer, put them together and you have some awesome tools.

Jeff_M, heard anything lately about Sinc????
-
Yes, Dent, sorry. I had meant to post this yesterday and got caught up in a work emergency.
I spoke with Sinc's Dad Tuesday evening. They changed his medication and his body seems to be really liking it as he's showing more improvement. He still is facing a long recovery period, but they are all quite optimistic for a full recovery. I hope to talk with Sinc again this weekend.
Will post more as I know more, in a more timely manner.
-
More good news.
-
verry good to hear!
-
Looks like I posted too soon, as I just got off the phone with Sinc's sister, Rinah. Today is not a good day, I guess he's been having some good and others not so good. Richard's liver has stopped responding to treatment now, and the enzymes are saying he's at the 19% survival level. The docs have decided to move him to a chronic care facility for 90 days since there is nothing more they can do except continue administering the medicines and hope they begin to work better. He is not a candidate for a transplant. I'm stunned and can't add any more.
Sounds like he needs all the help from above that he can get.
Come on, Sinc! We are all praying for your speedy return to good health!
-
Not good. But now I know what I want for Xmas: a healthy Sinc!
-
Well damn. :(
So many questions. Trying to honour privacy, but so many questions. <bites tongue>
Get well Richard!! Prove all the doctors wrong!!
Michael.
-
I wish I could say more, Michael. I now know that Sinc was found unconscious in his home. As best anyone can tell, he'd been there 2-3 days (he lives alone and it was Thanksgiving week in the US). The doctors still think his liver was affected by a combination of medications he's been taking. It started producing ammonia that was released back into the body which clouded his brain...this probably explains why he hasn't been very active online for some time now. The liver is normally able to regenerate itself, but I guess it has been damaged to a point where it is either unable to do so or is doing it very slowly.
And due to his time with no food or water before he was found, his kidneys also started their shutdown mode. They appear to have returned to normal function, so we just need the liver to start doing it's thing again.
His sister posted on Facebook, so I guess I can say it here, that she and her sister (who both live here in CA) are going to be headed to CO "to say goodbye, just in case..".
-
wow. havn't been online here in a while. best of luck to you sinc. hope you get better. the world needs people like you!
-
Abundant thank you for the info Jeff. Sure reminds one of the delicate fragility of life, and the rather narrow corridor of optimal bodily conditions within which we all exist. I so hope Richard has a full recovery and long healthy life ahead.
-
My best wishes to Richard and his family....
I am much saddened to hear something so terrible has happened to such a grat guy.
-
Continuing the positive thoughts and vibes coming from this side of the pond...
C'mon sinc, we want you well again!

Got off the phone with Jim Sincovec about 20 minutes ago. Doctors have just told him they don't expect Richard to make it through Christmas. Nothing short of a miracle will help now....
At a loss for words, sorry.

-
thats to bad. thanks for the update Jeff.
Would like to know where i can send a card or something, when you get a chance.
-
Any cards, letters, whatever can be sent to:
Richard Sincovec c/o
Edward-James Surveying
2764 Janitell Road
Colorado Springs, CO 80906
His dad, Jim, is the James in the company so he will be sure to get them to Richard. He's told me this is probably the easiest/best way to do so.
I am revising this at Jim's request. Please see the new address in a post by me on Dec. 19 in this thread.
-
Thanks Jeff.
-
Thank you very much Jeff.
-
I will remind everyone that the doctors originally said that he would not make it through that first awful night. They were wrong then. Now is the time to really pray for Sinc. Even if you do not believe in that stuff, it can't hurt. Me. I believe. I believe prayer got him through that initial night and i believe it can work again. Bad news is no reason to stop the efforts. just means you have to increase your efforts. It ain't over until it's over.
-
Well, no miracles this time. At approx. 7:45 p.m MST, 12/18/12, Richard left us for the everafter. I know, from seeing all of the posts here at theSwamp & on the Autodesk forums and speaking with others at AU, he will be greatly missed.
Richard, thanks for first helping me on the old newsgroups and the Swamp forums, then becoming 'net friends, and finally meeting face to face and allowing me to have some input with the SincpacC3D. I learned a lot from you every step of the way, and I will continue to grow from it.
R.I.P. good friend.

So very sorry to hear this news :(
Would you please pass my condolences to all those left behind.

Thank you Jeff, ps: hope you're doing ok.

Thanks, MP. I'm doing ok, considering the circumstances.

I've just been able to check back here, and am deeply saddened by the loss of Sinc... I am new enough to the online community to have only crossed paths with Sinc a small number of times... His reputation preceded him, he lived up to it when I met him, and I am sure his memory will live on in kind.
Despite my not knowing Richard personally, as so many of you do, even I know that we have lost a bright burning candle:

RIP Sinc
You touched a lot of lives and will be well remembered!

My final post on this thread. I can't count how many times over the last month I've thought of something I wanted to, or had intended to, ask Sinc. Knowing I never will be able to now is saddening.
Richard's dad sent me his Obituary, I thought I should share it here:
Richard Jeffrey Sincovec, 42, known to many as “Sinc”, passed away much too soon on December 18, 2012 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born in Pueblo, Colorado on August 27, 1970, he is survived by: mother Lynn Lucero, father James Sincovec and step mother Verna Sincovec all of Colorado Springs, also by sisters Elizabeth (Doug) Williams, Rinah (Vince) Ramos and brother Duston Voorhes, all of Santa Rosa, California, uncle Richard (Deanna) Sincovec of Lincoln Nebraska, also nieces and nephew Rebekah, Katelyn and Taber Williams, and his faithful 4-legged companion of 12 years Zyzzyx (Z).
Richard graduated from Overland High School (Aurora Colorado) in 1988, then attended college at the California Institute of Technology (Cal-Tech) and the University of Colorado in Boulder. After leaving Cal-Tech he worked for Jet Propulsion Laboratory on a project team for the Mars Observer and the Hubble Space Telescope. Most recently, he worked with Edward-James Surveying, Inc. as chief technology Officer. He was also President of Quux Software, Inc., and created custom software for Autodesk Civil 3D users (Sincpac-C3D).
Richard was an accomplished musician and member of the local pop-folk fusion group, Custer Street Consortium. He loved his music, played many instruments and also composed many of his own original pieces. He enjoyed fishing, camping, skiing, reading and going to live concerts with his long-time friend Eric Eichorn. He also loved helping others solve technological problems on various CAD-related, on line forums.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at the Shrine of Remembrance, located at 1730 E Fountain Boulevard in Colorado Springs, on February 1, 2013 at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Bear Creek Dog Park, where Richard and “Z” spent many happy hours, or to a humane society of your choice.
