Title: DWF Writer
Post by: SMadsen on February 18, 2004, 11:17:05 AM
Has anyone tried the new DWF Writer (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=3429575)? It's kinda cool to print a word doc to dwf and view it in the Express Viewer. What do you guys think?

perfect Stig, another great find !
I'm just off to try it hopefully it'll mean I can plot DWF's direct from my EDMS instead of having to open Acad every time

That is way cool..... I will have to put that in as one of my regularly used tools.

They gave that to us at AU in one of the subscription luncheons.

Man, I haven't even looked at the subscription gift thingy. They said it contained some 'neat stuff' (which I immediately translated to my native language as 'promotion stuff')

Anyway, when someone finds out how to print a dwf with a black background through the DWF Printer, please post the solution.
Until then I'll continue to use DWF6 ePlot.pc3 (which can handle background color!).

This new tool is pretty cool. The big thing I am figuring out is why an html page with dwf's created from ACAD 2002 (publish to web) is unable to be viewed using the new viewer?

Good question. Stig, the dwf writer thingy didn't come in the 64MB removable drive. They gave it too those of us who signed up for the luncheon where they were promoting it. As far as what's inside the drive: promotional stuff and the latest service pack for 2004 and some extensions.

Daron, thanks for the clarification.

AfricaAD, which new viewer would that be?

SMadsen, sorry, I meant the new Autodesk DWF viewer (4.1).

If I path directly  to the dwf file, it opens it. When I load it as an html page, it notifies the user they will need a viewer (e.g. volo view express) to view the page. Since VVE is no longer available, I installed the new viewer, and I receive the same message and is still unable to view the dwf attachment. I read a bit on the help files but didn't get a clear solution to it. I am assuming I will need to recode the html page so that users with VVE or ADWFV installed will be able to view the page. I am hoping someone already has an answer.

I am creating a web area with some samples of my CAD work with an option to view the page as dwf's or images. Understandably, users without a viewer will need to install one and I am making sure that it will work regardless if it is VV, VVE or ADWFV.

anyone figured out a way to configure this DWF writer ?

By default it places the DWf in some obscure directory which takes me ages to browse to. (yeah I know I can make a shortcut) I would have thought there would have been an ini file or something but I can't find anywhere to define an output directory

Mine asks me where I want to put the file.

(5 minutes later)

Ah ha! There it is!

Start -> Settings -> Printers and Faxes -> Autodesk DWF Writer -> Printing Preferences -> Advanced...
Document Options
--Printer Features
----DWF Filename: Prompt for filename

Did any else have to open the supplied link in IE, because FF didn't not display all the questions?

I has to open the link in IE because neither the describe your business of or primary field question where shown in FF. Damn MircoSoft and their java script.

By the way NICE FIND!  8)

Dwf Writer was never meant to be used in Acad.  Thats what DWF ePlot is for.  DWF writer is meant to give the ability to provide all of your "deliverables" in ONE format to your client. (Specs, Word docs, etc.) It also saves you money on PDF if you needed to buy Adobe

I have been using it since last April, works pretty well for the most part....

I don't believe it's possible (but what do I really know).

Have a good one, Mike
