Creating Surface from codes in assembly
« on: November 07, 2008, 04:49:47 PM »
I am ultimately trying to get accurate earthwork quantities.  I have created the finished ground surface with no problem, and have the existing ground surface from the survey.  I have been trying to create a surface under the pavement structures from the corridor using codes from the assemblies that I have created.  They are fairly simple assemblies that include a pavement section and a curb and gutter section.  Unfortunately, the points and links don’t like the vertical areas and will go to the next point or link.  Also, the cross sections show that the points and links that are being referenced are random for the same assembly.  This gives me a surface that is nowhere near anything that I can use to get earthwork quantities.  Please let me know if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this.

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=1109794 first go complain like hell by following the link.
This little issue has long desired a fix; however autodesk doesn't seem to think it warrants any attention.
You should let them know otherwise.

Next you will want to use the corridor feature lines to not the codes to create your surface.

you can do this either in the corridor dialog, or from Corridor>>Utilities>>Create feature line from corridor.

Isn't there an easier way to calculate earthwork besides making another surface at datum?  Doesn't C3D subtract the pavement structure automatically?

how are you currently calculating your quantities?

define corridor
define corridor surfaces from links
define sample line group
define take off criteria
compute materials
run volume report?

Yes, I did all that, but it is not subtracting the pavement structure.  If I want it to have quantities taking the pavement structure into account, do I have to create a datum surface, or is there a way to subtract the structure automatically through the Compute Materials?

yes you will need a datum surface....
