FYI (AutoCAD 2004)
« on: February 10, 2004, 11:16:24 AM »
Just an observation I would like to pass on. Adesk claims one of the reasons to upgrade to 2004 is the file sizes. Well I just noticed something while saving and compressing dwg files. For those of us using 2004 try this:
Create a fairly large 2004.dwg, say 10MB, save it then zip it.
Now take the same dwg and saveas 2000 and zip it.
Notice the file sizes between the zipped and dwg's.

Look at these.

Code: [Select]

  11M Feb 10 10:54 US-COUNTIES-2000.dwg
 9.7M Feb 10 11:00 US-COUNTIES-2000.zip
  10M Feb 10 09:03 US-COUNTIES.dwg
  10M Feb 10 11:02 US-COUNTIES.zip

Code: [Select]

  12M Feb 10 10:53 US-Cities-2000.dwg
 3.1M Feb 10 11:01 US-Cities-2000.zip
 4.7M Feb 10 07:56 US-Cities.dwg
 4.2M Feb 10 11:01 US-Cities.zip

That's interesting. The reason the dwg file is smaller in 2004 is that it is already compressed. That is why the zip file is minimally smaller, if at all. Really, it seems that you're seeing the uncompressed file actually compresses more than the 2004 file, which would seem to say that the 2004 drawings are actually larger in size than its predecessors.

It's funny how they also say that 2004 will print faster than any previous version. The guy across the cube wall from me is on 2002 and print come out a bit faster from his than from mine.

I've noticed that as well.  Not to mention the conflict we now have with our copier/printer.
Some of the guys here have to unload one driver from the plotter and load the Ricoh driver in order to print to the Ricoh copier/printer.  Then unload that driver and reload the plotter driver in order to plot.

HM, do you have larger files from drawings you've saved back to 2000 than your counterparts that might be working in 2002-? That could be part of your problem too.

Compressed File Sizes

Am I understanding this correctly?

The new AutoCAD 2004 file system utilises compression to provide 'smaller file sizes' (claim AutoDESK?).

But in reality if I wanted to then compress the file using winzip to email a drawing I wouldn't see a significant drop in file size?

Correct. That is the results I am finding.

At AU it was stated that A2K4 uses file compression. Judging from one particular speaker, they had been wanting to do it for a while. He put it something like this (quoting only from memory): 'technology finally gave us the opportunity to incorporate file compression, so we did that'. What he referred to with 'technology' was the speed of present day hardware.
