I have never done model a garage in 3D This is for my dad he wants me to draw his garage in 3D plus an addition to his garage. What do you model when you are drawing say garages in 3D? Is it just the outside surfaces? Or do you add all studs and rafters and garage doors and such? Thanks for any feedback
-
You could draw all of the studs, rafters, etc... and THEN do a materials takeoff, but if all you want is a pretty picture I would just draw walls, doors, windows and a roof using ADT.
What software are you running??

My program adds all the wall framing automagically.
I would say if you are just doing it for a pretty picture though you could just do the surfaces.
-
I will be using I-Deas at work
I think just the out side surface will work great
wow That would be cool to add all the framing automatically. Does it add like all the cripples and headers and corner stuff?
Thanks for the feedback

I just whipped up a 26'x32'
Something like this....

You cad model it steps and film it to show it going up. Like Hole dug, then slabs, then Wall studs then trusses, then ..., then ...; you get the idea. The play movie to your DAD.
-
sWeet Maverick that almost looks like the one I want to model
The first pic is what I am looking for
that was quick and rendered also
Is that just surfaces? the one with the truss and studs is also cool
-
They are the same model. I just disabled the view for the siding, sheathing, openings etc.

What software are you using? Is this Autocad?
Thanks

SOftplan never heard of that one I might google it and research it and check it out
This is just for my dad and add ons to his current garage. Thanks for the help
I will post some pics when I get done modeling the garage.

Can you import .dxf?
-
Yes I can I can import just about anything from DXF to Step to Iges to Sat Pro-e Catia you name I can import it.

What software are you using? Is this Autocad?
Thanks
BWhahahahahahahah

I forgot the hole
-
I've never tried this. See what you get when you import this.
-
WOW CAME IN GREAT
That is some cool software
Thanks
-
It's fun to play with.
Not to bad to work with either. ;-) :-D
-
Best part is that took... *lessee 1:32 to 1:54, takes off shoes, count's toes.......* 22 minutes to make that model.
Of course that is a very simple model but.....

22?? How many frickin' toes do you have??!? :-o :?
-
2 hands 2 feet = 22 phalanges. Why? How many do you have? :-D

I can only get up to 21.
-
Greg's missing his left pinky toe. Hey, you could get 22 if you count your head, Greg.

I did count my head....oh that one!
-
binary fingers and toes goes further...
-
I had to line up everyone at the office to figure out long this one took. :-D

ADT opened it with no problem though none of the fancy rendering material came with it. Unless I didn't hit the right switch. :|
But I had fun playing with it. I really wanted the hole.
-
That is just the solids and surfaces. The rendering is applied from a material file that is saved from each job (or applied to a new job) that applies all the bitmap/jpeg textures from a directory. I have one master material file that has neutral colors and so on that I will show customers first and then start changing that to which colors they want. Tough to get it perfect to what they want but...... if they are willing to pay for the time to do so......
-
Does this software spit out a material list also?
I will read up on it when I get home

With some up front prep, yes it does.
-
With an addon you can buy for $600 it can make a material list. However I only know of a very few people who have made it work for them efficiently. It's a ton of work to set up and one has to draw and build the model in a specific way. I've just never been able to justify the time needed to make it effective. Like many things in the long run it would probably pay off but..... not for us.
