You can only tell it the type when you create the page setup. Otherwise it is read-only.

Thanks.
After I posted, I checked the VBA section of the Developer guide and used it like this:
(vla-get-modeltype (vla-get-activelayout *active-doc*))
vlax-fase
now I understand how to figure these things out.
