Virtual Memory.....?
« on: August 12, 2005, 02:19:30 PM »
I've got a test file from one of our users.  It's currently:
acad 2004
2.90MB file size
17 layout tabs (plus model space)
131 (count 'em: 131!) viewports
In my acad options/system tab/regen options
"cache model space and last layout tab" is selected.

Horrendous performance issues, to say the least.
I just upgraded to 1 Gb RAM and it's slooooow.  I am under the impression that switching layout tabs causes acad to regen model space once for each viewport in the file, so that means 131 regens of a 2.9MB file every time I switch layouts.  Can anyone confirm this?
I know, it's a lot of vp's, but the jobs done... I'll let it lay.

I thought, maybe my page file size is too small, so before I torque it up I thought I'd ask Mr. Wizard (ie, you all) if it'll help my performance.  (The Blue pill is plan B) :)

From the windows help file:
Quote
"For best performance, set the initial size to not less than the recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system."

Is that a typo? "not less than" ??

My Current settings:
c: drive
initial size (MB) 384
maximum size (MB) 768

Total paging file size for all drives
Minimum allowed:    2MB
Recommended:        1534MB
Currently allocated:   729MB

registry size
Current registry size:   26MB
Maximum registry size:   54MB

Will a larger page file size help?

Yes, each viewport will need its own regen.  I am not sure which of the three options will give you the fastest performance, but I would try each one to see if it makes much difference.  The rest of your settings look OK.  You may just need more memory with that number of layouts and viewports.  We are upgrading all computers to 2GB because of performance issues.

131 viewports?

Good luck improving performance unless you turn off (view mview) those viewports that are not essential for your current tasks. As long as all of them are active, t h i n g s  w i l l  b e  s  l  o  w  .  .  .
