Pirate Civil 3D
« on: May 27, 2008, 11:23:58 AM »
Over the course of the next few weeks I am endeavoring to create a document that covers many of the Typical Processes that one need to complete in a typical Civil Project. The goal is to give a more complete overview of the Tools in C3D and how to apply them in different engineering scenarios instep of the Endless Loop that one user described that occurs with the existing documentation in print.

Please let me know if there are particular tasks, or challenges that you might like to see included.

Unlike other texts of this nature IF the software can not, or does not perform the task you need I will clearly illuminate the user to these defects, and deficiencies.

Current General Topics in the Text:

Toolspace we will introduce the Prospector, and the The Settings Tab
Points, Styles, Labels, Symbols, and Description Key Sets
Surfaces: Imported from Land Desktop, DEM, Built from Points
Survey Data: configuring the Survey Database, Figure Styles, and Field Books
Alignments,Styles, Labels
Profiles,Styles, Labels
Assemblies
Corridors
Pipe Networks,Styles, Labels
Sheet Creation
Reports

Thanks in advance for the consideration , and ideas!
Be your Best

That was clearly my motive, and it worked.  Pretty transparent aren't I?

Is this going to end global warming?

Only if that is the intent of the project you are designing with C3D.  In which case god speed to you!

However given my intended distribution will be digital format it should not add to Global Warming or deforestation.

As-Builts  . . . yes some of us HAVE gotten to that frontier and they can be quite problematic depending on the information required

Final Plats - especially surrounding how to incorporate existing deed information as opposed to new coordinate systems and rotations or when surveyed information does not match the deed or surrounding plats.

Multi phase projects - especially when a project may have one phase approved and under construction, a second phase nearing the end of the design / approval phase and future phases that are starting some preliminary presentations all at the same time . . . who knows, those times MAY return someday.

DinØ,

As to 'As-builts' That process might be a bit much to cover depending on what the reviewing or permitting agency wants to see on them.

The short course of action would be to Copy ones Design file, to a(n) ASBUILT-filename and manually override the labels and values as dictated by the actual construction of the facilities as shown by the model. If the requirements are any more than putting a line through the plan value and then placing a new label manually for the elevations, lengths, or materials installed that are different than as called for on the plans.

Is this the process your agencies require? If different can you outline them?

The Final Plat adjacent historical information is reasonably easy to handle. I might want to put the Survey information and tips into another volume.  If you notice the original contents I posted including nothing about Parcels?

As is phasing should one employ data shortcuts such that each phase is correctly creating and referencing the right surfaces, alignments, profiles, etc.

I recently noticed on a project, and this was the first time I believe it has happened in my experience, that when creating a surface I would get different results if I added points first, then breaklines as opposed to breaklines, then the points. Don't know if it is something I did or the way C3D processes the data that gave the result, but if you are aware of this being a C3D issue be sure to touch the subject.

I would be as detailed as you can about the more complex subassy's and the way they behave as well.

Otherwise my two weakest areas are parcels and piping which I would love to see some good info on as I may actually get to utilize these tools someday... maybe. :|

Yes the algorythm is impacted by the order data is added to the surface. In the Surfaces exercise the best practice, or order of operation will be suggested.

I think this is a great idea- and fills a definite gap in the present documented "knowledge base" of written and online materials.

If you are interested in self publishing, there are some neat on demand printing shops I've messed around with for some other things I've worked on that you might find useful. One of them is http://www.lulu.com/.
