Block/Attribute rotation
« on: January 12, 2011, 02:56:42 PM »
I have a block with attributes I've been using for 8 years to show spot shot elevations.  It's basically 2 pieces of text(attributes) with the insertion point being on the "X".  Looks sorta like this:

         ##
      ##
     X

Up until very recently, I would select a bunch of them, go to the properties box, type in a rotation value and each block would all rotate individually around their insertion point.  When I do this now, each piece within the block rotates around it's own insertion point, instead of the blocks insertion point.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

can I see a copy of your block?

then I can give you a good answer

Dave...

WHAT are you doing?

I inserted three of your blocks...

I select all three, and rotated them 45 degrees...they appear to have rotated NORMALLY about the insertion point of said block (see attached)

Have you recently upgraded AutoCAD? The block was saved by 2004/2006 ... in AutoCAD 2008 and later the behavior of attributes were modified. Now when blocks are modified in the properties window and programmatically, the attributes behave erratically.

Further information on that particular bug introduced in the 2008 version can be found here

FYI, I did my testing in 2011
and found NO erratic behavior.

Perhaps they only go wacky if there are more than three of them, and then perhaps quorum sensing takes over and they behave more like a Herd of zebras than a pack of blocks?

Yes, I figured it wasn't the block itself as it hasn't been modified in some time.  It's gotta be a system variable that somehow changed.  If I start a new drawing and insert it, I still have the same problem.

I don't have 2011 at my disposal. The behavior was on the bug list after 2009 was released ... perhaps they corrected it in 2011, or perhaps that isn't the problem at all ;-)

I need to run out...I'll continue my experiments later.

Dave, you seem to indicate that you have a file wherein the blocks DO NOT behave in this fashion; my I see that file, or a portion thereof?

I do not have a drawing that it will not do it in.  But here's a few shots I put in, copied over and rotated through the properties box.

Dave you must be 'seeing' things.

Those attributes within the copied and rotated blocks ARE rotated about the blocks; insertion point.
They look exactly like the ones I rotated in the properties box.

What are you wanting to happen? Do you want the X to rotate and the attributes to remain horizontal?
Or do you want the attributes to rotate, and not the X.

Perhaps create something from bits and pieces of an exploded version of the block to illustrate the desired result.

Curious...if you are doing survey or engineering work that you are not using Civil 3D. My brain wants to know why?

Interesting.  Here is what I see(attached).  How do you post images into the message rather than attaching them? As far as the Civil 3D thing goes.  It's out of my hands, but basically, the company I work for is owned by one of the largest home builders in the country.  When the market tanked, our 22 employees in my office became 3.  Upgrading software, hardware, etc...became a non-option.  We will be upgrading to Civil 3D, but need to upgrade computers first.  I also had to shoot down the Carlson idea as well.

am I blind or something?  I don't see where you mention the cad package and version you're getting these results in.  :?
